Our research and development programs

The company is currently engaged in the design and distribution of functional beverages and beverage concentrates in the USA, Mexico, South Africa, Japan, China, Taiwan and Korea.  Product sales help support research in the following areas:

Togo project:  In cooperation with Prime Minister Dr. Kwassi Klutse, our team, directed by Robert Bender, M.D., performed a study with 111 advanced AIDS patients using a peptide/water blend to improve nutritional status.  After 3 months of use, the average weight gain was 7 pounds.  Ninety percent of the test subjects showed better hydration (as a function of phase angle), better functionality and improved energy with high levels of significance (p<0.001).  This is not a treatment for AIDS, but rather an inexpensive nutritional system that could help victims of this disease physically function more effectively.

South Africa: working with Jacques DeBeers, we have worked to develop products that are hydrating and functional.  As stated by Jacques, “I have had a pleasure of working with the Cluster Solutions group for the last 5 years.  We have used the technology in our manufacturing of drinking water and functional tea beverages.  We have found that the patented process increases cell hydration, leads to improved cell function and promotes rapid recovery following exercise.  The professional South African rugby team the Blue Bulls has reported improved performance and recovery, and uses the solutions as part of their training and maintenance program.

We have opened 5 small production facilities to serve clients in the Johannesburg area.  One particular interest is in helping the underprivileged with AIDS by distributing solutions that promote weight gain and improved function. There are more than 5 million people with AIDS in my country who need nutritional support.   I am convinced that the solutions can serve as a delivery system for a wide range of nutrients and other important compounds and urge further research.”

Diabetes project:  Type 2 diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases on the planet.  More than 50 percent of Americans could have diabetes or prediabetes by 2020 at a cost of $3.35 trillion over the next decade if current trends continue, according to a new analysis by United Health Group’s Center for Health Reform & Modernization.  However, there are also practical solutions for slowing the trend.  New estimates show diabetes and prediabetes will account for an estimated 10 percent of total health care   by the end of the decade at an annual cost of almost $500 billion – up from an estimated $194 billion this year.  Certainly, food choices and management are the critical issues, but if we can offer beverage and food alternatives that help in the management, that would be of great impact.  Lead by our medical director Bernard Deberry, M.D. and supported by research from Francisco Carrillo, M.D. and Zhi Wang, Ph.D., our group is designing and testing foods and beverages that can help in diabetes management.  For example, using a blend of herbal extracts from China and India, we will start a human clinical study at a USA university in January 2012.  Testing with many customers in Mexico has yielded promising results, but the clinical double blind test will validate these observations.

Athletic performance & recovery

We have had many reports that our solutions improve performance and recovery.  To test this, we gave mice our solution or a control for 30 days, and then tested swimming endurance.  The animals using our solutions more than doubled swimming time.  These results are published in The Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition.

Dr John Ivy, Chairman of the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Texas, Austin has developed a number of protein/carb blends to enhance performance.  His recent accomplishments include assisting in the design of the new Wheaties cereal, Wheaties Fuel.  Dr Ivy has developed a performance/recovery system known as Puresport which is used and endorsed by Olympians such as Michael Phelps.

These clinically proven performance products rely on unique ratios of proteins and carbohydrates with electrolytes to maximize performance and exercise recovery.  Our solution is sold along with these products in retail outlets in the United States.
